GRAY ELECTION DAY: As expected, clouds have been hanging tough over much of Alabama today with only a few peeks of sunshine. Temperatures are in the 50s in most spots.

Another impulse coming down the back side of the deep upper trough over the eastern U.S. will bring some light rain to the northern half of Alabama tonight; rain amounts this time should be mostly 1/4 inch or less, and the best chance of rain comes from about 9:00 p.m. until 4:00 a.m. There is a good chance this rain will be gone by the time you drive to work tomorrow.

BECOMING WINDY TOMORROW: The sky will clear tomorrow, with morning clouds giving way to afternoon sunshine. But, the pressure gradient will tighten up as another nor’easter rolls up the Atlantic coast. Northwest winds will average 12-22 mph, with occasionally higher gusts. And, the day will be cool with a high only in the mid to upper 50s.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: These days will feature cold mornings, with lows mostly in the 30s, but milder afternoons. The high Thursday will be near 60, followed by upper 60s on Friday. The sky will be sunny both days with a dry airmass in place.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Still looking dry and mild. Lots of sun on Saturday with a high around 70, and low 70s are possible Sunday, with a partly sunny sky. Winds should pick up Sunday ahead of a cold front and upper trough to the west; that feature could bring severe weather to parts of the Great Plains Saturday night and Sunday.

STORMY MONDAY: The 12Z GFS hints at a line of strong to severe storms blowing through Alabama Monday night, with the main risk coming from strong straight line winds along the line. Then, we turn colder on Tuesday with a clearing sky. See the Weather Xtreme video for more details on the severe weather threat and the associated graphics.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Looks great. Clear and cool for the high school playoff games Thursday and Friday nights… temperatures will fall through the 50s.

For Saturday’s Alabama/Texas A&M game at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, the sky will be mostly sunny with a temperature near 70 degrees at kickoff, falling into the 60s during the second half. Auburn will host Georgia Saturday evening at 6:00 at Jordan-Hare Stadium; the sky will be clear with a kickoff temperature near 65 degrees, falling into the 50 during the second half.

STORM ALERT XTREME IS SATURDAY: Our annual storm spotter training is coming up this Saturday at the BJCC, as part of the Alabama International Auto show. We begin at 9:00, and you will be done at 2:00. And, as a “thank you”, you will get free admission into the car show. There is no cost, and no need to register, just show up. Brian Peters will be the trainer, and we ask all existing and potential Skywatchers to attend. We are excited that Kevin Laws of the NWS Birmingham will be conducting a session on using dual-pol radar. See you there!

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. Scroll down for the show notes on this week’s new episode.
