COLD MORNING: Colder pockets have a freeze this morning across Alabama… here are some 5:00 a.m. temperatures…

Russellville 28
Black Creek (just northeast of Gadsden) 29
Fayette 31
Concord 31
Fort Payne 32
Gadsden 32

Lots of frost this morning, and there are also some patches of very dense fog. Once the fog burns off, the day will feature a good supply of sunshine with a high around 60 degrees.

Similar weather tomorrow… we begin the day well down in the 30s, with a freeze for colder spots, but we warm nicely with a high in the upper 60s along with a good supply of sunshine.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Afternoons will be mild Saturday and Sunday; we expect a high in the 70 to 73 degree range both days. The air stays dry, and we expect a good supply of sunshine through scattered high clouds. Sunday becomes breezy by afternoon as the pressure gradient becomes tighter ahead of a major storm over the nation’s heartland. SPC has parts of the Great Plains under a “slight risk” of severe weather Saturday, but for now there is no formal outlook Sunday or Monday to the east.

NEXT WEEK: A round of strong storms should move through here Monday night. While the tornado threat looks low for now, some of the storms could bring strong, gusty winds as the line moves into the state. Looks like the main window for storms will come from about 6:00 p.m. Monday through 3:00 a.m. Tuesday, with rain amounts around 1/2 inch.

Colder air arrives Tuesday and Wednesday with highs in the 50s, and a freeze is possible, if not likely, early Wednesday morning of next week.

LONG RANGE: Mid-month looks active, as global models suggest several rounds of showers and thunderstorms. Pretty much what we expect this time of the year as we get into the core of the fall severe weather season in Alabama. See the Weather Xtreme video for the details and graphics.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Looks great. Clear and cool for the high school playoff games tomorrow and Friday nights… temperatures will fall through the 50s.

For Saturday’s Alabama/Texas A&M game at Bryant-Denny Stadium in Tuscaloosa, the sky will be mostly sunny with a temperature near 72 degrees at kickoff, falling into the 60s during the second half. Auburn will host Georgia Saturday evening at 6:00 at Jordan-Hare Stadium; the sky will be clear with a kickoff temperature near 66 degrees, falling into the 50 during the second half.

STORM ALERT XTREME IS SATURDAY: Our annual storm spotter training is coming up this Saturday at the BJCC, as part of the Alabama International Auto show. We begin at 9:00, and you will be done at 2:00. And, as a “thank you”, you will get free admission into the car show. There is no cost, and no need to register, just show up. Brian Peters will be the trainer, and we ask all existing and potential Skywatchers to attend. We are excited that Kevin Laws of the NWS Birmingham will be conducting a session on using dual-pol radar. See you there!

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
