Sharply Colder Air Arrives Saturday

HAPPY THANKSGIVING! What a delightful day for Alabama… Birmingham reports 71 degrees at 3:00… that is nine degrees above the average high of 62, and 8 degrees away from the record high for November 22, 79 set way back in 1900. The sky is sunny and humidity is low. Nobody is complaining.
We will enjoy one more relatively mild day tomorrow with a high in the mid to upper 60s, but a cold front will pass through the state during the afternoon hours that will bring some clouds, and maybe even a few sprinkles to the northern quarter of Alabama. Measurable rain is not expected, and the weather begins to turn sharply colder tomorrow night.
COLD WEEKEND: Both the GFS and the NAM now have our low at 32 degrees early Saturday morning. The day Saturday will be sunny, but breezy and cold. The GFS is printing a high of only 49 degrees for Birmingham Saturday afternoon, and then we head for the 20s early Sunday, which will be our coldest morning so far this season. Sunday will be sunny and cool with a high in the upper 50s.
FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the high school playoff games tomorrow night, temperatures will drop through the 40s with a chilly north breeze at 7 to 14 mph, but the sky will be generally clear.
Saturday’s Iron Bowl in Tuscaloosa will be dry and cold. The sky will be sunny with a kickoff temperature near 51 degrees. The mercury will drop into the mid 40s by halftime, and could very reach the upper 30s by the final whistle. A north breeze of 10-15 mph will make it feel colder.
UAB will travel to a warmer setting, where they play UCF in Orlando Saturday (11:00 a.m. CST kickoff). The sky will be mostly sunny, with temperatures rising from near 66 at kickoff to around 70 degrees by the fourth quarter.
NEXT WEEK: A dynamic weather system will impact Alabama late Monday night and Tuesday. Run to run consistency has not been that great, and the latest GFS in hand (12Z) isn’t as bullish on severe weather. It hints at potential for strong storms, main in the window from midnight Monday night to 12:00 noon Tuesday. But, with limited instability, and a rather unfavorable surface pressure field, the severe weather threat looks somewhat marginal. But, this will probably change again as we get closer, so stay tuned. Looks like rain amounts of 1/2 to 1 inch are likely.
