A Cold Winter Day

RAW, COLD DAY FOR NORTH ALABAMA: Our fancy computer models suggested a high in the upper 40s today; for some places in North Alabama they are barely above freezing at mid-afternoon with low clouds hanging tough. The observation station at Haleyville reports only 33 degrees at 3:00… that is 20 degrees below average for January 2.
But, to the south, the sun made a brief appearance and Montgomery and Auburn are in the low 50s.
TONIGHT: A disturbance will bring the risk of a little light rain to communities near the Gulf Coast tonight; up this way the low levels are very dry and I doubt if we have any precipitation at all. Having said that, I would not be totally surprised to hear of a touch of sleet or a flake of snow somewhere. But, it won’t be significant and most places will remain dry despite the low clouds.
TOMORROW/FRIDAY: The weather on these days won’t be as cold thanks to returning sunshine. The high both days should be close to 50 degrees, with early morning lows at or below freezing.
THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: There will be an increase in clouds over the weekend due to an approaching short wave, but there just isn’t much moisture to work with, and I figure we won’t see anything other than a sprinkle or two Saturday night or Sunday. Afternoon temperatures both days will be near seasonal values with low to mid 50s.
NEXT WEEK: We stay dry Monday and Tuesday, the GFS continues to hint our next rain event will come Wednesday night into Thursday. Some thunder will be possible, but the lack of instability and weakening dynamics should prevent a severe weather issue.
MID-MONTH: The GFS continues to look very cold for mid-month… too early to say exactly how cold and when it gets here; see the Weather Xtreme video for the graphics and details. I know the snow lovers are wanting a day to make them happy, but no evidence for now through the next 15 days of a significant snow event for Alabama. But, the season is young, you know…
