How Wet Is It?

| February 22, 2013 @ 8:57 am

If you think February in Central Alabama has been wet, I would agree with you. But it really hasn’t been that wet for some of us.

Looking at the climatological reports for Central Alabama, nearly everyone is above the average monthly rainfall with the exception of Anniston. I’ve assembled some data on the rainfall reported so far this month from stations across Central Alabama in the table below. The table clearly shows that the rain has been less in the East Central part of the state and wetter in the Central and West Central sections.

Rainfall Rainfall
Station Feb. 2013 30-Yr Avg
Birmingham 4.29″ 4.21″
Anniston 2.93″ 4.80″
Tuscaloosa 5.44″ 5.07″
Helena 5.81″

With a couple more rounds of wet weather forecast for Central Alabama, these numbers will go up. When you combine them with the values for January, 2013 has really gotten off to a wet start! The monthly and three-monthly outlooks suggest a change to a pattern with above average rain for the northwest corner of Alabama and below average rain for the southeast corner. Central Alabama shows as about equal chances of above or below!

Now if you really want wet, just go a bit further south. Montgomery has seen 8.62″ of rain for February which is 4.80″ above the 30-year average.
