More Rain For Alabama Tonight

RAIN MOVING BACK IN: Rain has re-entered West Alabama this afternoon, and that rain will expand to the east and north with time tonight. Temperatures are all over the board thanks to CAD (cold air damming)… Fort Payne reports only 45 degrees at mid-afternoon, while West Alabama communities are in the low to mid 60s. Yet another great example of why this is not a “one number” kind of place when it comes to forecasting temperatures.

Additional rain amounts of one-half inch are likely tonight, with more possible in a few spots. Some thunder is possible, but severe weather is not expected over the northern counties of Alabama. Heavier rain is likely over South Alabama, and our friends down there could see some strong storms tonight as well. A flash flood watch is in effect for most of South Alabama.

TOMORROW: The rain tomorrow should be confined to the southern half of Alabama, mainly south of U.S. 80. Over the northern half of the state, the sky will remain cloudy throughout the day with a high in the low 60s. The sky will finally clear tomorrow night.

SUNDAY: This will clearly be the best day over the weekend, with ample sunshine and a high in the mid 60s. But, clouds return quickly Sunday night ahead of another major upper trough.

MONDAY: Lots of model madness, but confidence is high in a good chance of showers and storms on Monday. The 12Z NAM shows potential for severe weather over about the southern half of Alabama, while the GFS shows the risk mainly over the southeast corner of the state around Dothan. We will just have to wait for more clarity over the weekend. The latest data hints that some rain could linger into Monday night.

The sky clears on Tuesday, and the rest of the week should be dry. But, much colder air blows in here at the end of the week on Friday, March 1, right at the beginning of meteorological spring. The following weekend looks very cold for early March, but mostly dry. See the Weather Xtreme video for the details, maps, and graphics.
