Afternoon Update

| February 25, 2013 @ 3:05 pm

Still calm weather across Alabama this afternoon, but to our west this is not the case. Tornado watch (large red box)remains in effect for portions of Mississippi, Arkansas and Louisiana. Across central Arkansas a severe thunderstorm watch (large purple box) has been issued. Along an approaching cold front, numerous showers and thunderstorms have developed this afternoon. Many severe thunderstorm warnings and some tornado warnings have been issued with this line. This activity will continue to move east through out the night. We are going to have to keep an eye on this activity, but we are expecting it to settle down some before making into Alabama later tonight.

Warm front remains to the south of Birmingham roughly along the Highway 80 corridor. The warm front is not expected to lift to much farther north and this should prevent widespread severe weather across Central Alabama tonight. The main focus for severe weather will remain south of the warm front as showers and thunderstorms are expected to continue initiate through the rest of the afternoon. Storms should last through the overnight hours. Hail, damaging winds and tornadoes will all be possible. Flooding remains the greatest concern across the region as additional heavy rains are expected.
