Clouds Departing

Clouds remain thick over the eastern third of the area this morning, but they are beginning to push into Georgia and the western edge is eroding as it does. Most of Jackson, DeKalb, Cherokee, Etowah, Calhoun, Cleburne, Clay and Randolph Counties are still cloudy.

It was interesting to watch stratocumulus clouds fill in a clear area over Jefferson and Blount Counties between 8:15 and 9:15 as heating gave just enough instability to make them pop. But as quickly as they appeared, they have been eroding as the scant moisture aloft pushes east with the trough.

If you drove west from Birmingham on I-20, you would have only crystal clear skies all the way to Abilene, Texas!

Temperatures are in the 30s now climbing toward the 40s. Highs won’t make it much past the lower 40s for most today, with some middle 40s thrown in as cold air continues to flow into the area.

It looks like the best chances for rain this week will come during the day on Tuesday as a low pressure system passing to our north drags a cold front through here. The chance of any severe weather looks minimal.

After a brief cooldown Wednesday, temperatures will trend back toward Springlike readings through the end of the week. We could be close to 70F by Sunday. But more storms will arrive early in that following week.
