RAINY DAYS AND MONDAYS: Remember the old song by the Carpenters?

“Talkin’ to myself and feelin’ old
Sometimes I’d like to quit
Nothing ever seems to fit
Hangin’ around
Nothing to do but frown
Rainy Days and Mondays always get me down.”

Hopefully you won’t be down today, because it is a rainy Monday. We will forecast periods of rain today; a little thunder is possible in spots, but the air is stable, and there won’t be any severe weather to deal with. Rain amounts of 1/2 to one inch are likely, and the rain will end from west to east by mid to late afternoon.

Temperatures will be going the wrong way today; a good chance they fall into the 40s over Northwest Alabama behind a surface front. Elsewhere, temperatures will fall slowly through the 50s as the rain falls. Bottom line is that today will be a cool, wet day.

The sky will clear tonight, and we project a low in the 30-35 degree range early tomorrow.

LONG DRY SPELL: The GFS is suggesting we go 10 days in a row with no rain beginning tomorrow, which is pretty remarkable for March, which is our wettest month of the year (average rain for the month is 6.10″).

The high tomorrow will be close to 60, but we drop back into the mid 50s Wednesday with a cool north breeze. A freeze is likely early Thursday, with a low somewhere between 27 and 32 for most places (don’t even think about planting anything that will be harmed by a frost/freeze this early!). Then, we hit 60 Thursday, followed by a high close to 70 on Friday.

MILD WEEKEND: The weekend looks great. Highs in the low 70s Saturday and Sunday with no rain. Doesn’t get much better.

LONG RANGE: A very quiet pattern sets up for the rest of March. The next rain event on the 00Z GFS is around March 21, and there is no sign for now of any significant severe weather threat for the rest of the month. See the Weather Xtreme video for the graphics, maps, and details.

AT THE BEACH: Every school system and college in Alabama has a different spring break week, you know, but some are out this week. For those headed to the Gulf Coast, today will be wet with occasional rain, but tomorrow through the weekend will be dry on the coast from Panama City west to Gulf Shores. Highs will be mostly in the 60s through Friday, with lows in the 40s. But, afternoon temperatures will rise into the 70s this weekend. The sea water temperature early this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is a cool 62 degrees.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. We will produce this week’s show tomorrow night at 8:30 p.m. CST.
