SLOW WARM-UP: With sunshine in full supply today, we will rise into the mid 50s. Still, 15 degrees below average for late March, but at least we are moving in the right direction.

Tomorrow morning will be cold again, with lows generally in the 29-35 degree range. Colder spots and protected areas will see yet another freeze. But, the warm-up resumes tomorrow afternoon with a high in the mid 60s.

FRIDAY AND THE EASTER WEEKEND: Moisture levels begin to rise. The GFS continues to show some risk of a little rain Friday afternoon over the northern third of the state, and we will maintain that risk in the forecast.

The 00Z GFS hints that a pretty good part of the day Saturday will be dry, with the most widespread rain north of here over Tennessee, close to a northward moving warm front. But, with a moist airmass in place we will mention some risk of scattered showers during the day Saturday. The good news is that we finally reach the 70 degree mark; the GFS is printing a high of 72 for Birmingham Saturday.

Easter Sunday looks wet, with occasional showers and a few thunderstorms thanks to the approach of a cold front. The severe weather potential looks low with the best dynamic support passing well to the north, and somewhat limited instability. The rain will taper off Sunday night as the surface boundary moves south of here. Rain amounts of 1/2 to one inch can be expected.

NEXT WEEK: Monday looks dry and mild with a high in the low to mid 70s. Moisture begins to return quickly with a risk of showers on Tuesday, and a significant storm system will impact Alabama at mid-week on Wednesday with a good round of rain and storms. This system seems to have the ingredients needed for severe weather, but there is no way to resolve the details a week in advance… we will just watch to watch this as the event gets closer. Cooler and drier air returns toward the end of the week. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Dry through Saturday; highs in the 60s and lows in the 40s (they are very close to freezing at Gulf Shores this morning). Showers and storms return on Easter Sunday. The sea water temperature this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is a cool 56 degrees.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
