THIS AFTERNOON: While temperatures are still below average, it sure is good to see 60s back on the map again with sunny sky statewide. Most places are in the 62-66 degree range at mid-afternoon. Tonight won’t be as cold as recent nights; most communities will drop into the 37-41 degree range, but there could be one or two cold pockets over Northeast Alabama that make a run at freezing.

Tomorrow will feature a mix of sun and clouds, and we will mention some risk of a shower late in the day and tomorrow night as moisture levels begin to rise. The high tomorrow should be anywhere from 67 to 71 as the warming trend continues.

EASTER WEEKEND: Unfortunately the weather will be wet at times. A few passing showers are likely Saturday with a mostly cloudy sky (although it won’t rain all day), and on Sunday we expect occasional showers and possibly a thunderstorm as a cold front approaches from the northwest. The GFS is printing a high of 69 Saturday, followed by 72 on Sunday. Two day rain amounts should be in the 1/2 to 1 inch range, and we do not expect any severe weather with the main dynamic support Sunday well to the north of Alabama.

NEXT WEEK: We will keep the chance of rain into Monday as the front will take it’s time in moving through the state. Showers are still likely, with the rain ending from north to south Monday evening.

Tuesday looks cool and dry for now… yet another cold, late season airmass will drop into Alabama. The high Tuesday should be only in the mid 50s… but thankfully it looks like clouds will move back in here Tuesday night, which should prevent a late season freeze early Wednesday.

The GFS and the ECMWF both show a Gulf of Mexico low next week… the ECMWF is more to the north, and suggests rain statewide Wednesday night into Thursday; it will be a cool rain with no thunderstorm issues with the surface low to the south. But, if by chance the GFS is correct, the bulk of the really significant rain will be over South Alabama. We will lean with the ECMWF for now.

Drier air returns late in the week on Friday as the low in the Gulf exits to the northeast. See the Weather Xtreme video for the latest maps, graphics, and details.
