An area of moderate to heavy rain is moving across Northwest and West Central Alabama late this morning ahead of a strong cold front.

The heaviest rain just before 11 a.m. was across southern Lawrence, Winston, eastern Marion, Walker, Fayette, Lamar and northern Pickens Counties.

There was some embedded thunder in parts of the precipitation area, mainly over the southern portion around northern Sumter, Grenee and Pickens Counties.

An areal flood advisory has been posted for parts of Lamar and Fayette Counties. Radar estimates show over one inch of rain has already fallen with heavy rain continuing.

The individual cells are moving northeast, while the precipitation area shifts east at about 30 mph.

Fortunately there is not much instability, so despite a very strong front, organized severe weather is not expected this afternoon. A couple of the storms could become strong over eastern sections of Alabama later today, but overall, the system will be weakening as it limps into Georgia tonight. There could be a few lingering showers through the evening hours, mainly east of I-65.

There is quite a thermal contrast across the front, with 70s over eastern Alabama, 40s in northern Mississippi and 30s back in Missouri. This colder air will work into the state tonight, pushing everyone well into the 40s, with a few 30s as well overnight. I guess winter just doesn’t want to let go.
