Dense Fog Gives Way To Some Sunshine

DENSE FOG ADVISORY: NWS offices in Huntsville and Birmingham have a dense fog advisory up for about the northern half of the state… where fog has formed visibility is very restricted, so you might want to take a little extra time to get to work this morning. Nothing showing up on the radar at daybreak.

BRIGHTER AND WARMER: Once the clouds and fog burn off later this morning, we expect a partly sunny sky during the afternoon, and we rise into the low 70s. With the upper low not that far away, I can’t rule out a few isolated showers this afternoon, but any that form should be over the Tennessee Valley of extreme North Alabama.

WARM-UP CONTINUES: We should reach the upper 70s tomorrow, and mid 80s are likely Thursday as it finally begins to feel like May in Alabama. While these two days should be generally dry, we do note the 4km NAM tries to develop a few isolated showers tomorrow afternoon, and we might consider mentioning that possibility in the forecast since there will be a tad of residual moisture around. But, we should see a decent amount of sunshine both days.

FRIDAY/SATURDAY: Moist air moves in from the south, an upper low will approach from the west, and a cold front from the north. We will mention just the chance of shower Friday afternoon and Friday night; the best chance of rain Friday will come over the northern third of the state.

Rain is more likely late Friday night into Saturday. I don’t think it rains all day Saturday, and the sun might even peek out at times. But, clearly rain is possible at just about any hour of the day or night. There might be a little thunder involved, but severe weather is not expected. The 00Z GFS has come in a little drier, showing rain amounts of around 1/2 inch.

DRIER AIR ARRIVES SUNDAY: The latest GFS/Euro runs are in good agreement; a cold front will push through very early Sunday morning. Showers will end early Sunday, maybe even during the pre-dawn hours. Then, the sky becomes partly to mostly sunny during the day Sunday and we turn cooler with a high in the low 70s.

MORE RECORD COLD? The 00Z GFS brings more chilly air down into Alabama early week… and suggests we could reach the 38-42 degree range at daybreak Tuesday (May 14). The record low for May 14 (for Birmingham) is 41 set in 1971… that might be in danger. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and more details.

The good news is that we don’t see any significant severe weather setup around here for at least the next two weeks. It is been another quiet tornado season, thankfully.
