Big Storms Move South

| June 28, 2013 @ 4:10 pm

**No Afternoon Weather Xtreme video today**

RADAR CHECK: Strong to severe thunderstorms are moving through far South Alabama this afternoon, where a severe thunderstorm watch remains in effect. However, up this way, things are quiet as the midday storms have cooled the lower atmosphere, making the air more stable.

We will have a somewhat disturbed northwest flow aloft in place, and more showers or storms could form over the next few hours (much like last night). If they do form, they will move southeast, and will bring lots of lightning and some brief heavy rain.

OUR WEEKEND: The air will be much drier tomorrow over the northern half of the state, and showers should be hard to find over North/Central Alabama. The sky will be partly sunny, and the high will be around 90 degrees. The heat backs off Sunday as the high drops into the mid 80s, and moisture will try and return, so a few scattered afternoon and evening showers and storms are very possible.

NEXT WEEK: A deep upper trough over the eastern half of the nation will keep temperatures below average next week with highs only in the mid 80s. Each day there will be some risk of scattered showers and storms… and with deeper tropical moisture showers and storms should be more numerous Wednesday through Friday, so we will be dodging raindrops at times on the Fourth of July. The intense heat will remain far to the west of Alabama, thankfully.

GULF COAST WEATHER: About 4 to 6 hours of sunshine each day this weekend with scattered showers and thunderstorms possible. Next week, tropical moisture levels rise, and showers and storms could become more numerous with decreasing amounts of sunshine. Highs will be in the 80s, and the sea water temperatures are in the low to mid 80s.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
