NO 90s FOR A WHILE: Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, and Anniston all failed to reach 90 degrees yesterday, and we expect that to continue all week thanks to an upper trough that will be over the eastern half of the nation. The air is pretty dry this morning (dewpoints are generally in the low 60s), so we figure showers and storms will remain widely spaced today and tomorrow with a partly sunny sky. Highs will generally be in the 85 to 88 degree range, which, of course, is below average for the first week of July in Alabama.

LOOKING WET WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY: Tropical moisture surges into Alabama over the latter half of the week, and with good ascent from the upper trough, with the axis a little west of here, we expect occasional showers and thunderstorms on these three days. There will be some breaks in the rain, but the Fourth of July for now looks pretty wet across much of Alabama. And, thanks to the clouds and rain, highs will be only in the 80-85 degree range. Some places might not get out of the 70s where the rain begins early in the day.

I know many outdoor events are scheduled, and there is no way to give you specific start/stop times for rain at any given location, but you will need to plan on wet weather. While severe thunderstorms are not expected, all summer storms do pack lots of lightning.

OUR WEEKEND: The weather trends drier thanks to a 5940 meter 500 mb upper high nosing into the state from the east. Showers and storms become scattered on Saturday, and it looks like a pretty decent part of the day Sunday could be rain-free. And, temperatures will trend upward. We will see a high Saturday between 87 and 90, and by Sunday low 90s are likely.

NEXT WEEK: The GFS wants to bring the core of the upper high right over us… which could mean hot and mostly dry weather for the first few days of the week. We could very well reach the mid 90s, but thanks to the deep soil moisture that should be in place, we high see highs in the low 90s. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and more details.

TROPICAL WEATHER: Tropical storm formation is not expected across the Atlantic basin this week.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Conditions not too bad today and tomorrow… about 5 to 7 hours of sunshine each day with scattered showers and thunderstorms. We should note that the purple flags were out yesterday at Orange Beach due to stingrays and jellyfish… not sure how long that will last (a little out of our weather domain).

Unfortunately the weather looks pretty wet Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from Panama City west to Gulf Shores with occasional showers and thunderstorms… only 1-2 hours of sun on each of these three days. Highs will be in the 80s on the coast this week; the sea water temperature this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 80 degrees.
