Fourth Of July To Be Wet At Times

NO 90s: Not a 90 degree reading on the board this afternoon across the great state of Alabama… temperatures are only in the 80s, and nobody seems to be complaining. Showers that were over East Alabama earlier today have mostly moved into Georgia, and the sky is partly sunny.

REST OF THE WEEK: Showers will remain pretty scattered in nature tomorrow, but look for an increase in the coverage and duration of showers and storms over the latter half of the week, Wednesday through Friday. We will forecast occasional showers and storms on those three days, with highs only in the 80 to 85 degree range. Some spots, where the rain begins early in the day, might not get out of the 70s. Needless to say, those temperatures are way below average for the Fourth of July in Alabama.

We don’t expect any severe weather, but don’t forget all summer storms pack lots of lightning, so plan on rain/storm issues if you have outdoor plans for Independence Day. Rain amounts Wednesday through Friday should be in the one to two inch range, but some communities could see more than that where the heavier downpours develop.

OUR WEEKEND: Showers and storms will become fewer in number, and mostly during the afternoon and evening hours as high pressure aloft begins to nose in here from the east. And, look for a warming trend; the high Saturday will be in the upper 80s, and we might touch 90 degrees Sunday afternoon.

NEXT WEEK: For now the weather looks more typical for July… highs up in the low 90s, with a few scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and storms each day. We will watch the strength of the upper ridge… model consistency has not been very consistent in recent runs, so a forecast close to climatology will probably work best for now.

TROPICS: Tropical storm formation is not expected in the Atlantic basin through the week.

GULF COAST WEATHER: About 5 to 7 hours of sunshine tomorrow with a few scattered storms, but only 1 to 2 hours of sun a day Wednesday through Friday with occasional showers and thunderstorms. The rain could be heavy at times over the latter half of the week; storm totals could approach five inches in spots. Highs will be in the 80s, and sea water temperatures are mostly in the low 80s from Panama City west to Gulf Shores.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes.
