Showers Are Widely Spaced

RADAR CHECK: Not much action on the radar this afternoon… but there are a few widely scattered showers and storms over the western and eastern counties… the I-65 corridor is mostly dry over the northern two-thirds of Alabama. Showers are moving to the west/northwest, so places like Birmingham and Clanton could see a little rain before those showers fizzle out later this evening. Temperatures remain below average, mostly in the mid to upper 80s with a partly sunny sky.

TOMORROW: A strong upper high (almost 6,000 meters at 500 mb) over Ohio/Indiana/Michigan will build southward into Alabama tomorrow, meaning hardly any showers, lots of summer sun through a shallow cumulus field, and a high around 90 degrees. Chance of any one spot getting wet is only 5 percent.

WEDNESDAY THROUGH FRIDAY: The upper high fades quickly, and as heights lower, the air aloft becomes colder, and instability values rise, scattered showers and thunderstorms will return to Alabama on these three days, mostly during the afternoon and evening hours. The coverage of the showers should slowly increase each day as we get close to the weekend, but we will still see some decent intervals of sunshine. The high Wednesday will be at or just over 90, but I expect highs to drop back into the upper 80s Thursday and Friday.

OUR WEEKEND: No wash-out, but it looks like we deal with scattered to numerous showers and thunderstorms Saturday and Sunday with a very moist airmass in place, and a surface front approaching from the north. Highs should be in the mid to upper 80s, and there will be intervals of sunshine.

The 12Z GFS tries to bring some drier air down into extreme North Alabama Monday, but not totally sure that can happen. We will hang on to the risk of scattered showers and storms into early next week.

TROPICS: All is quiet across the Atlantic basin for now, and tropical storm formation is not expected this week.

GULF COAST WEATHER: About 6 to 8 hours of sunshine daily through the weekend and the weekend ahead, with the standard risk of scattered showers and storms on a daily basis. Highs along the immediate coast hold in the upper 80s, and the sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab this afternoon is 85 degrees.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. We will produce this week’s show tonight at 8:30 p.m. CT… watch it live on “James Spann 24/7”, our digital weather channel on cable systems around the state, or on the web here.

I had a great time today seeing the kids in the summer program at Fultondale Elementary School… be looking for them on the Pepsi KIDCAM today at 5:00 on ABC 33/40 News! The next Weather Xtreme video will be posted here by 7:00 a.m. tomorrow…
