Watching a winter storm event unfold in Alabama is like watching a big football game for some of us…go ahead…admit it…I ‘ve got my popcorn…watching the reports roll in tonight right here with you…

But the wintry weather has a sinister side…with slick roads…and slippery steps and decks and sidewalks. So it is imperative that you monitor the latest conditions before you venture out overnight tonight or tomorrow morning. We Alabamians don’t do well on snow…and even worse on ice

Fortunately, this is going to be a short duration event for most people.

Here is the latest…starting from the NW corner of the state…

31 with light now in Muscle Shoals…temperature will fall into the upper 20s overnight with snow continuing…NWS Huntsville reports reduced visibility in Muscle Shoals…some slick roads in Lauderdale County. Visibility down to 2 miles at MSL. Look for a nice little snow in the NW part of the state. Accumulations near two inches.

Huntsville 34 with snow, Decatur 32. Still room for mercury to fall here also. Visibility down to 2 miles at the Huntsville Airport. Hartselle…large flakes the size of half dollars…largest observer has seen in years…one tench of an inch of accumulation on grass…roads getting slick…nice snow on tap for the Valley.

31 at Hamilton tower cam site. Good snow and sleet mix moving acoss Marion County with accumulation likely. Precipitation cold change over to freezing rain. Travel problems likley before precip changes over to all rain in the morning.
Expect similar conditons down through Lamar and Fayette Counties. 33/30 in Fayette..with no travel problems reported.

34/29 in Jasper. Mercury will fall to freezing for a few hours, leading to some incing. Travel problems will continue through early morning. Should mainly be a mix of sleet and freezing rain changing to all rain after sunrise.

Cullman…33/26…looks like sleet or light snow on Skycam…road looks wet…again some accumulation of sleet and snow, changing over to freezing rain…travel problems a pretty good bet before precip changes over to rain around or after sunrise.

Northern Jefferson and Blount over into St. Clair …
Just before midnight…Skywatcher Kenny on the Clay/Trussville border report temperature had dropped to freezing with ince forming on paito furniture. Icing will be likely across northern sections of Jefferson from over near Corner through Warrior, Kimberly and Morris over to Pinson, Trussville and Argo, as well as over Blount and St. Clair Counties as temperatures edge near freezing. The freezing rain should change over to rain after sunrise…alleviating the icing conditions.

Gadsden…
33/19 at our site…I think NE Alabama, including Marshall…Jackson… DeKalb… will get socked with a good coating of snow, sleet and glaze overnight. Travel problems will be likely. Light sleet reported in Altoona a few moments ago. Snow getting heavy in Arab with a temperature of 31F.

Anniston…
At midnight…it was 35/28 at Anniston…temperatures will come very close to freezing, with light rain possibly changing to freezing rain for the next few hours. Travel problems may occur.

Birmingham…
35/25 atop the Daniel Building downtown. Temperature not moving foward is good sign, but will could get 3 degree drop. We will be borderline for icing problems in the morning in the Birmingham area. Check the latest conditions before driving.

Tuscaloosa….looks to be out of the woods. OUr person in T-town does report the mercury has fallen to 36 however.

Late report to the west…Starkville MS still raining with a temperature of 32.2. You can see the effect of warmer air aloft.

A Winter Weather Advisory continues until…
6 a.m. for Fayette, Lamar, Marion, Walker, Winston, Jefferson, St. Clair, Calhoun, Blount, Cherokee, Etowah, Clay, Cleburne, Randolph and Talladega Counties…
9 a.m. for Franklin, Lincoln, Moore [TN] and Lauderdale, Colbert, Limestone, Madison, Jackson, Cullman, De Kalb, Franklin, Lawrence, Marshall and Morgan Counties…

All residents in the Winter Weather Advisory areas must check the latest conditions before heading out to work or school this morning.
