RADAR CHECK: At daybreak showers and a few thunderstorms were scattered from just northeast of Birmingham up into parts of Cullman, Morgan, and Limestone Counties. The heavier downpours were around the Tennessee Valley, and the showers are moving southeast.

We will forecast occasional showers and thunderstorms across Alabama today in a very moist environment; precipitable water values are running in the 1.5 to 2 inch range across the state. Of course, the rain won’t be continuous, and the sun will be out at times, but storms that do pass through will produce heavy amounts of rain in spots. Temperatures remain below average; the high today should be in the upper 80s for most places. We note that Birmingham has failed to reach 90 degrees so far during the month of August, and this is usually the hottest time of the year.

REST OF THE WEEK: No real change in the overall synoptic pattern through Friday. Moist, unstable air will remain in place, and with an upper high to the west occasional ripples of energy will move into Alabama from the northwest, so scattered showers and storms remain possible on a daily basis. And, while most of the showers and storms will come during the afternoon and evening hours, a late night or morning shower or storm is certainly possible. The highest coverage of the showers and storms should come over the northern counties of Alabama.

OUR WEEKEND: Things just won’t change much. Mixed sun and clouds Saturday and Sunday with the continued chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Highs between 87 and 90 degrees. And, no real change into early next week.

GULF COAST WEATHER: About 6 to 8 hours of sunshine each day through the weekend from Panama City over to Gulf Shores with a few scattered storms. Highs around 90 on the immediate coast, and sea water temperatures are running generally in the mid 80s. No sign of any tropical weather issues… tropical storm formation is not expected across the Atlantic basin through mid-week.
