Rain Expanding into Alabama

As expected, rain has overspread much of West Alabama tonight.

The leading edge of the precipitation extends from Cullman to Jasper to Tuscaloosa to Demopolis.

There isn’t any thunder yet in Alabama, although some lightning is being detected north of Merdian. This will move into West Alabama’s Pickens County.

The rain and some storms extend back to a cold front, that extends from near Little Rock to Tyler, Texas late this evening. This activity will continue to spread into Alabama overnight and early Saturday.

There is fairly good agreement between the models that the front will continue a steady southeastward progression, reaching I-59 around noon. The rain will have tapered off by the time it arrives. This means that the rain should be mainly over by kick off at Legion Field for the UAB game. And in Tuscaloosa, the rain should also be over by 3 or 4 p.m. We can’t rule out the rain lingering longer than we expect, but we have hope that both games may be mainly dry. Tailgating activities will be wet however.

In Baton Rouge for the Auburn game, there is still a very good chance of rain and thunderstorms through the contest. Hopefully this won’t result in lengthy suspensions due to lightning. The game can be played in a downpour, but not in lightning. Flash flood watches are in effect for Baton Rouge and southeastern Louisiana.
