RUMORS RUNNING WILD: Let me quote a small part of post I wrote on social media last night…

“I have spend considerable time today putting to rest rumors of…

*A major snow storm next week

*A major snow storm February 7

*A major snow storm February 14

*A major snow storm in March

Could these things happen? Yes. Will they probably happen? No. Does anybody really know? No.

There is very little skill in a specific forecast beyond seven days. You can use pattern recognition, and look for model consistency. But, no real skill.” Just wanted to say up front there is no empirical evidence of any big snow event right now for North-Central Alabama. Keep reading for the meteorological discussion….

NOT AS COLD: Temperatures are mostly in the 20s across Alabama at daybreak, and the warming trend will continue today with a high in the low 50s for most communities. The air will stay dry, and the sky will be partly sunny. Those lingering icy patches on shaded side streets should melt this afternoon, finally.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: The warming trend continues; we reach the upper 50s tomorrow, with low 60s very possible Sunday. Moisture levels rise tomorrow, and a shower or two is possible, but much of of the day should be dry despite a mostly cloudy sky. Showers are more likely Sunday ahead of an approaching cold front. Rain amounts Sunday and Sunday night should be in the 1/2 inch range.

NEXT WEEK: A zonal flow over the U.S. will bring an interesting and active pattern for a while. A rather energetic storm system will bring breezy and showery weather to Alabama Tuesday, followed by a round of organized showers and strong thunderstorms Tuesday night into early Wednesday morning. There is a fairly high amount of low level bulk shear (surface to 925 mb)… in the 30 knot range, but very little surface based instability, so for now the risk of severe weather look low, but we will keep an eye on the situation.

Rain will end Wednesday, followed by colder air on Thursday and Friday.

THE LAND OF VOODOO: Another chance of strong storms shows up on Saturday February 8; there has been good model consistency in this idea… followed by sharply colder air the following day. Some evidence of snow flurries around Feb 9, but nothing beyond that. Another storm system shows up around February 12 that is lower in latitude… see the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and more details.
