Moisture Returns Over The Weekend

THIS IS MORE LIKE IT: With a good supply of sunshine, temperatures are mostly in the 50s across the great state of Alabama this afternoon. It almost feels like spring, and we sure have come a long way since Tuesday.

WHAT ABOUT THE WEEKEND? Moisture levels will rise, and there will be an increase in clouds during the day tomorrow. But, with little dynamic support, any showers that form should be few and far between. The high will be around 60 degrees. Showers become more likely Sunday; the 12Z run of the GFS hints that while showers are certainly possible during the day, the most widespread rain will come Sunday night into early Monday morning. Rain amounts of around 1/2 to 3/4″ are likely here.

To the north, some snow is possible Sunday night from parts of Arkansas into northern Tennessee, but that will not impact Alabama in any way.

NEXT WEEK: A vigorous weather system will bring a round of showers and storms to Alabama at mid-week. Tuesday will be mild and windy with a chance of showers, then stronger storms arrive Tuesday night into early Wednesday.

We will need to watch this for severe weather potential. While surface based instability is very low, shear values are high, and there is excellent dynamic support. Cold season systems like this can surprise you when it comes to severe storms. We will monitor it over the weekend.

The rain ends Wednesday morning, followed by colder air Thursday and Friday, but nothing like the cold we have experienced this week.

THE LAND OF VOODOO: Weather systems will bring rain to Alabama around February 9 and February 13 (timing, of course, could change), but there is NO evidence of any snow threat for North-Central Alabama, despite what you might read on somebody’s Facebook wall or Twitter feed. Please take some time to see the afternoon Weather Xtreme video for all of the maps, graphics, and more details.
