Very Cold Night Ahead

THIS AFTERNOON: The sky is slowly clearing across North-Central Alabama this afternoon as cold air continues to settle into the state from the north. Temperatures are generally in the 37-42 degree range.

Tonight will be very cold. The 12Z GFS is printing a low of 18 degrees at Birmingham… we figure most places will be somewhere between 16 and 22 degrees early tomorrow morning. The record low for Birmingham for February 27 is 15 in 1963; don’t think we break it, but we won’t be far away.

WARMER DAYS: Tomorrow and Friday will feature a sunny sky with a warming trend. The high tomorrow will be around 50, followed by mid to upper 50s Friday afternoon. Clouds move in Friday night as a warm front passes through, and a little light rain is possible Friday night into Saturday morning. Nothing widespread or really heavy.

MILD WEEKEND: Other than that risk of a shower Saturday morning, the weekend looks good with the warming trend continuing. We reach the mid 60s Saturday, followed by low 70s Sunday with a mix of sun and clouds. Clouds thicken again late Sunday and Sunday night, with some potential for showers ahead of an approaching storm system.

MORE BIG CHANGES NEXT WEEK: A surface low will move over Alabama Monday bringing a good chance of rain, and possibly a thunderstorm. Then, another surge of very cold air moves in here for Tuesday and Wednesday. We will probably have a hard time getting out of the 30s Tuesday with a stiff north wind, and we go well below freezing early Wednesday morning with teens likely for colder pockets across North Alabama.

We might make a run at record lows early Wednesday morning (March 5). See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details. The good news is that we don’t see any sign of winter weather mischief, or severe weather threats over the next 15 days at this point.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
