Our Saturday is starting off on a chilly note with lows this morning in the 30s. Our Noccalula Falls Skywatcher reported 32 degrees under a clear sky. Passing cirrus should not limit the sun too much, so we should see the afternoon highs climb to near 70 degrees.

Set your clocks forward tonight with the start of Daylight Savings Time once again. Spring Forward!!

There’s nothing major ahead for us in our weather, but the overall pattern remains pretty active with a continuation of a series of weather systems.

The first one comes along on Sunday but there is going to be somewhat limited moisture, so while we can’t rule out a few showers, it certainly does not appear to be a big rain event. That short wave moves by Monday, but the upper profile is expected to be rather dry into Tuesday.

A trough hangs back over Mexico Monday and comes out across the Gulf Coast on Tuesday and Wednesday. The track of this system could change and bring more rain to the area, but for now it looks like the main rain threat will be along the Gulf Coast. For Central and North Alabama, we should be rain free much of Tuesday with rain chances increasing into late Tuesday and early Wednesday. With weak ridging late Wednesday and into Thursday, we should see a brief chill down once again Thursday morning with lows dipping into the 30s.

The weak ridging Thursday does not last long as yet another trough moves into the Middle Mississippi River Valley on Friday and across the eastern US on Saturday. This is likely to bring another chance for showers, although once again moisture seems to be somewhat restricted. But this trough should deepen along the East Coast Sunday and Monday which could spell another significant cold spell for Monday.

The outlook for Week 2 shows a continuation of the parade of upper level troughs moving briskly across the country with one around the 20th and another around the 23rd. Both of these seem substantial enough to produce the potential for some severe weather, but the details will come as we get closer to these events. The big idea is that the pattern remains pretty active.
