WINDY, COLD AFTERNOON: As forecast, temperatures have been falling over North Alabama this afternoon with a strong north wind. Birmingham is down to 50 degrees at 3:00 p.m. CDT, with a northwest wind gusting to 30 mph. Communities north of Birmingham are down in the mid to upper 40s, and clouds continue over most of the state.

FREEZE TONIGHT: The sky will clear tonight, and the wind will die down as the pressure gradient relaxes, allowing temperatures to drop into the sub-freezing range early tomorrow. We expect lows generally in the 28-32 degree range over the northern half of the state.

Tomorrow will be sunny and cool with a high in the mid 50s; Friday will be another dry day with a morning low in the low to mid 30s, followed by an afternoon high in the mid 60s. Clouds will thicken Friday night as moisture levels rise.

RAIN AT TIMES OVER THE WEEKEND: We will have to dodge occasional showers Saturday and Sunday. Some rain is possible as early as Saturday morning, but the latest model trends suggest the most widespread rain will come during the period from noon Saturday through noon Sunday. The rain certainly won’t be continuous, but just understand it could come at any time.

Rain amounts of around 1/2 inch are likely this weekend, with potential for totals to one inch over the southern half of the state. Probably not much thunder, and no severe weather is expected. Highs will be in the 60s both days.

NEXT WEEK: For now the week looks mostly rain-free. For Monday and Tuesday, we project highs in the 60s and lows in the 30s; the latter half of the week will be warmer.

Still no sign of any big severe weather problems through the next 15 days.

TWENTY ONE YEARS AGO TODAY: The great “Blizzard of 93″ started. During the night of March 12, and the early morning hours of March 13, Birmingham picked up 13 inches of snow. The snow was complete with thunder and lightning, and winds on ridge tops gusted to almost hurricane force. Some of the suburbs just south of the city saw almost two feet. The state was pretty much shut down for three days, and power was knocked out to thousands because of the heavy, wet snow, and the high winds. These are scans of photos from the historic event in Alabama. So you remember?
