CHILL IN THE AIR: The average high for Birmingham on March 24 is 69… most locations are about ten degrees below that level today; afternoon temperatures are generally in the 57-62 degree range around here. We have sunshine through high clouds, and the low levels are very dry.

BLUSTERY AND COLDER TOMORROW: A strong pressure gradient will develop over Alabama tomorrow, with a 1035 mb high to the west, and a rapidly deepening surface low just off the Atlantic coast. North winds will average 15-25 mph, with higher gusts. Despite a sunny sky, the high tomorrow will be only in the mid 50s, and some communities up across the Tennessee Valley won’t get out of the 40s. Sure won’t feel like mid-May.

WEDNESDAY MORNING FREEZE: Freezing temperatures are likely for North and Central Alabama at daybreak Wednesday. Most places will see a low between 25 and 30 degrees, but the colder spots could see low 20s. A freeze warning will be issued by the NWS. Growers will need to protect blooming plants and tender vegetation.

Wednesday will be sunny and cool, but the wind will be light and variable; the high will be in the mid to upper 50s.

THURSDAY/FRIDAY: A warming trend begins Thursday as we rise into the 60s, then Friday will be mild with a good chance of showers and possibly a thunderstorm. Severe weather is not expected with no real surface based instability and weak wind fields aloft.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: A secondary front will pass through Alabama Saturday morning, and a shower is possible, but the rest of the weekend will be mild and dry. Some sun is possible Saturday afternoon, and Sunday looks beautiful with sunshine in full supply. The high both days will be up in the mid 70s; the GFS is printing a high of 77 degrees for Birmingham on Sunday.

See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

AT THE BEACH: Chilly weather through mid-week for the area from Panama City to Gulf Shores. Highs around 60; lows in the 40s. But, the sky should be mostly sunny tomorrow and Wednesday. A shower is possible late Thursday, but showers and storms are more likely on the coast Friday. Then, for the weekend, just a small risk of a stray shower Saturday morning; otherwise rain-free weather Saturday afternoon through Sunday.

The sea water temperature at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab this afternoon is 61 degrees.
