Freeze Warning Tonight

An all new edition of the ABC 33/40 Weather Xtreme video is available in the player on the right sidebar of the blog. You can subscribe to the Weather Xtreme video on iTunes by clicking here.

BLUSTERY: The pressure gradient will tighten up across Alabama today, with a 1030 mb high to the northwest, and a rapidly deepening surface low just off the southern Atlantic coast. This will mean winds averaging 15-25 mph this afternoon, ushering in much colder air. We won’t get past the low to mid 50s today, and the wind will sure make it feel colder. Our friends up in the Tennessee Valley (Huntsville, Muscle Shoals, Athens, Scottsboro, etc) won’t get past the 40s. More like mid-January. At least the sky will be generally sunny as the colder air arrives.

FREEZE WARNING TONIGHT: Freeze warnings are up for almost all of Alabama (except the southern half of Mobile and Baldwin Counties, and the southeast corner of the state), and most of the adjacent states.

For North/Central Alabama (places like Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Anniston, Gadsden), we project lows between 25 and 30 degrees, but the colder valleys over North Alabama could see low 20s by daybreak tomorrow.

LAST FREEZE? It is possible, but doubtful. We almost always have a significant cold snap in early April; I would still hold off planting anything that will be harmed by freezing temperatures.

TOMORROW/THURSDAY: Another cool day tomorrow with a high in the 50s, but the wind will be light, and we will have sunshine in full force. A warming trend begins Thursday with a partly sunny sky and a high in the middle 60s. A few showers could reach Alabama Thursday night.

RAIN RETURNS FRIDAY: We will forecast a good chance of showers and thunderstorms Friday thanks to an approaching cold front. We note SPC has put up the standard “slight risk” of severe weather Thursday from northeast Texas to Missouri, but I do not expect severe weather in Alabama Friday as the primary surface low moves into eastern Canada; our wind fields are weak, and dynamic support is not impressive.

The initial front will stall out somewhere around Central Alabama… it looks like the primary threat of showers and storms Friday will come during the morning hours, but a few lingering showers sure can’t be ruled out Friday afternoon or Friday night.

OUR WEEKEND: A secondary front will pass through Alabama Saturday, and another organized band of showers and thunderstorms is likely mainly Saturday morning. With this front, the surface low will be more to the south, over West Virginia, but instability is weak and severe weather doesn’t look likely. But, this is late March and we will keep an eye on model trends.

Drier air arrives Saturday afternoon with a clearing sky; the high should be in the low 70s. Sunday promises to be a beautiful spring day, with sunshine in full supply and a high in the low to mid 70s.

NEXT WEEK: Great weather continues Monday through Wednesday with mostly sunny mild days and clear cool nights. Next chance of showers and storms will come over the latter half of the week. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.

AT THE BEACH: Sunny, but breezy and cool today with a high around 60 from Panama City west to Gulf Shores. Tonight will be cold, early morning lows tomorrow will be around 40 degrees on the coast. Tomorrow will be sunny and cool with a high only in the upper 50s. Just a small risk of a shower Thursday afternoon, followed by a better chance of showers and thunderstorms Friday and Saturday. Then, beautiful weather is likely Sunday through the first half of next week.

The sea water temperature this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 61 degrees.
