Weather Update Just After 1 PM

| March 28, 2014 @ 1:09 pm

The weather looking a little better for Central Alabama this afternoon as round 1 of a two round rain event has edged out of the area. Radar at 1 pm showed the bulk of the rain across southern and East Central Alabama east of a line from about Heflin to Alexander City to Montgomery, but the sky remained overcast. Much of the area along and south of the Interstate 20 corridor received on the order of 2 to 2 and a half inches of rain from round 1. This has filled streams, ditches, and small brooks as well as saturated the ground, so we will need to be wary that any additional heavy rain that might occur early Saturday morning could create flash flood issues in some locations.

Fortunately, the threat of severe storms has diminished somewhat, and the SPC has pulled the slight risk area out of nearly all of Alabama with the exception of the Southeast corner for tonight and early Saturday.

Lots of interest in the weather for the exhibition ball game tonight between the Southern League champion Birmingham Barons and the Chicago White Sox. Latest weather data and computer model runs maintains the idea that any rain or thunderstorms will not return until after midnight. Temperatures during the game will most likely be in the range from about 58 to 62, so a light jacket might be in order for those headed to the game. While we can’t completely rule out a small passing shower, the bulk of the rain is not expected to return until after the game is over. Due to the widespread precipitation this morning, patchy fog may form this evening, so be alert to this on your drive home from the game.

Since my daughter lives in Chicago, it’s not an easy choice, but I’ll have to pull for the hometown boys in this game. Go Barons!!
