Watching Storms To Our West

| April 8, 2014 @ 1:40 pm

We are keeping a careful watch on some thunderstorms moving east across Mississippi today. These will move into Alabama later this afternoon and will bring a threat of some gusty winds and hail.

A cold pocket of air in the upper-levels, which is very favorable for hail development, is moving across the region today. The cold pocket is allowing for a bit of destabilization of the atmosphere and is why we are seeing this convection develop.

There have been a few severe thunderstorm warnings with these storms over Mississippi, mostly because of the hail threat. Numerous reports from the NWS in Jackson of pea to marble size hail occurring and some storms are producing enough hail to cover the ground in some areas. Certainly something for us to pay attention to heading through the rest of today.
