RADAR CHECK: Showers and storms have moved into West Alabama this afternoon as a cold core upper trough approaches. Due to the cold air aloft, some small hail is possible, but I doubt if the storms reach severe limits (the hail must be 1 inch in diameter or larger to be considered severe).

Showers will move across Alabama between now and midnight… rain amounts of 1/4 to 1/2 inch are expected, so no flooding issues this time.

TOMORROW THROUGH FRIDAY: The sky becomes mostly sunny tomorrow, but the weather will stay cool with a high in the mid 60s. Thursday morning will be pretty chilly with a low around 40 degrees; the traditionally colder places across North and Central Alabama will see mid to upper 30s, and a touch of light frost is possible, but for now the frost is not expected to be widespread or especially harmful.

A nice warming trend begins Thursday with a sunny sky and a high in the mid 70s. Friday will be sunny with a high in the upper 70s.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: Looks delightful, with sunny warm days, and fair nights. Highs 77-81, with lows in the 50s.

NEXT WEEK: A dynamic weather system will bring rain and thunderstorms to Alabama Monday. The GFS brings the primary surface low right over Alabama, meaning the primary threat could be heavy rain and potential flooding, but it is way too early to determine the severe weather threat since that could easily change.

After the rain, a shot of colder air will arrive for mid-week, and once again we will need to monitor this for potential for a frost/freeze situation. See the Weather Xtreme video for the latest maps, graphics, and more details.

AT THE BEACH: A few showers are likely on the coast tonight, then mostly sunny days and fair nights tomorrow through the weekend (just a small risk of a shower Sunday afternoon). Highs on the immediate coast will stay in the 60s because of the cooler ocean water, but 70s are likely just few miles inland. The sea water temperature this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 65 degrees.

WEATHER RADIO PROGRAMMING: We will be at the Publix in Oxford tomorrow from 3:30 until 6:30… if you need your weather radio programmed, have questions, or need to buy one, come see us.

ON THIS DATE IN 1998: An EF-5 tornado killed 32 people in the western Birmingham suburbs of Oak Grove, Rock Creek, Sylvan Springs, Edgewater, McDonald Chapel, and Pratt City. The same parent thunderstorm dropped another tornado in St. Clair County, killing two north of Pell City.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. We will produce this week’s show Thursday at 8:30p CT.
