SOAKING RAIN: Quite a rainy day in the great state of Alabama. A large mass of rain and storms covers much of the state at mid-afternoon; some communities have received over one inch of rain so far, and the rain keeps falling.

CLAY COUNTY TORNADO WARNING: A brief circulation showed up on radar over western Clay County, and we had a short lived tornado warning around 3:30 this afternoon, but no additional tornado warnings are expected.

To the west, the western counties have been rain-free for a few hours, but a line of storms is entering West Alabama as I write this. The storms over Northwest Alabama will produce heavy rain, gusty winds, and lots of lightning.

The rain will end after midnight as drier air pushes in from the west.

MUCH COOLER TOMORROW: We note Memphis and Little Rock are barely out of the 40s at mid-afternoon, and we will feel that cooler air tomorrow.

We don’t expect to get past the mid 60s tomorrow; the sky will be partly sunny and the day should be dry for North-Central Alabama.

FRIDAY THROUGH THE WEEKEND: Look for lows down in the mid 40s early Friday and Saturday morning; the record low for both mornings in Birmingham is 43 (May 16 set in 1973; May 17 set in 1956)… we will be very close to that level. The high Friday will be in the low 70s, followed by mid 70s Saturday and upper 70s Sunday. Each day will be partly sunny, and our weather will be mostly rain-free. Spokes of energy rotating around the base of the big upper trough could squeeze out a little light rain over the northern third of the state, but for places like Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Anniston, and Gadsden, the chance of rain is tiny.

NEXT WEEK: Dry weather is the story for at least the first half of the week with highs back in the 80s. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.

AT THE BEACH: Rain and storms will wind down late tonight, and the sky becomes partly sunny tomorrow from Gulf Shores over to Panama City. Perfect weather Friday through early next week with sunny days and fair nights… highs on the immediate coast will be in the upper 70s. The weather could not be better for the annual Hangout Music Festival in Gulf Shores this weekend.

WEATHER RADIO PROGRAMMING: We are at the Publix on Highway 150 in Hoover from now until 6:30 p.m… if you need help, come see us.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
