HEATING UP: We are finally getting into a more typical summer pattern here in Alabama, with more sunshine, hotter afternoons, and few afternoon storms. A flat 500 mb ridge covers the Deep South setting up the drier pattern thanks to warmer air aloft.

The high soil moisture levels will keep the afternoon heat in check to some degree, but we still expect a high around 90 today, with low 90s through mid-week. Each day will feature a good supply of sunshine, but understand the chance of rain is not zero. A few isolated showers and storms will fire up during the peak of the daytime heating process, but the chance of any one spot getting wet for the next few days is only about one in five. Here is the HRRR model depiction of what radar should look like this afternoon…

Showers will fade away quickly once the sun sets.

LATE THIS WEEK AND THE WEEKEND: The upper ridge will weaken, and with colder air aloft we expect a slow increase in the number of scattered showers and storms. That doesn’t mean the weekend will be all wet, but just a better chance of seeing an afternoon shower or thunderstorm. Highs will drift back into the 88-91 degree range Saturday and Sunday with a mix of sun and clouds both days. And, that pretty much sums up the weather into early next week.

AT THE BEACH: Looks great this week from Panama City to Gulf Shores, with mostly sunny days, fair nights, and just a few widely scattered storms around. Highs on the immediate coast will be in the upper 80s, with low 90s inland. The sea water temperature this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 81 degrees.

TROPICS: The Atlantic Basin is quiet and tropical storm formation is not expected this week.
