COLD FRONT INTO NORTH ALABAMA: The cold front is just north of Birmingham as I write this… the dew point up at Muscle Shoals has dropped to 46 with a north wind of 10 mph, gusting to 16 mph. The dew point at the Birmingham Airport is still 69… but it will drop like a rock in coming hours as drier air rushes into the state.

Showers and storms are in progress along and south of the front… those will end this evening as the dry air takes over.

TOMORROW/THURSDAY: About as nice as it ever gets in Alabama in the middle of July. Sunny days, low humidity levels, and cool nights. We project lows in the 57 to 61 degree range both tomorrow and Thursday morning, with even cooler temperatures across the colder valleys of North Alabama. Birmingham’s record low for July 17… 62 set in 1965… is very much in danger.

FRIDAY AND THE WEEKEND: The GFS continues to trend slower with the moisture return at the end of the week, and now suggests a decent part of the day Friday could be rain-free. We will mention the chance of a storm late Friday afternoon and Friday night, and then the weekend looks rather unsettled with occasional showers and thunderstorms Saturday and Sunday. WPC grids suggest rain amounts over the weekend could be in the three inch category over the northern half of Alabama, so more beneficial summer rain looks likely.

The high Saturday and Sunday will be only in the mid 80s due to the clouds and showers.

NEXT WEEK: An intense heat bubble will develop over the Southwest U.S… but around here the air remains moist and unstable, and scattered showers and storms remain possible at least for the first half of the week. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Mostly sunny weather tomorrow and Thursday with only isolated showers for Gulf Shores and Pensacola… a little higher risk of a storm or two near Panama City. Then, for the entire Central Gulf Coast Friday through the weekend… about 5 to 7 hours of sunshine each day with the usual risk of scattered thunderstorms. Highs along the immediate coast will remain in the upper 80s, and sea water temperatures are mostly in the mid 80s.

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin remains very quiet and tropical storm formation is expected through the weekend.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
