COOL MID-SUMMER MORNING: What a fall preview this morning. Here are some temperatures across Alabama at daybreak, and keep in mind this is the 17th of July…

Fort Payne 52
Valley Head 52
Russellville 55
Coldwater 56
Gadsden 57
Concord 58
Cottondale 58
Anniston 59
Birmingham 61
Tuscaloosa 63

Birmingham, with 61 degrees at 6:00, has established a new record low for July 17… the cold record was 62 in 1965.

Today will be another delightful day with ample sunshine through high clouds and a high in the mid 80s. Those high clouds produced quite the sunrise early this morning… this photo was over Birmingham from @ductst on Twitter

TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: Moist air returns tonight, and we will deal with rain at times on these three days. The latest model runs are now suggesting rain could break out across North Alabama as early as tomorrow morning, and we will bump up the risk of rain during the day. A few showers and thunderstorms are likely tomorrow night and Saturday as wave energy approaches from the west. The rain on Saturday won’t be continuous, however, and the sun could break out at times. Just keep in mind it could rain at any hour of the day if you have something planned outdoors. The high Saturday will be in the low to mid 80s due to the clouds and showers.

Showers and storms should become more scattered in nature Sunday with a mix of sun and clouds, and a high in the upper 80s.

NEXT WEEK: Look for partly sunny weather Monday through Wednesday with the risk of scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms. Highs back up around 90 degrees. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and details.

GULF COAST WEATHER: A good supply of sunshine today from Panama City over to Gulf Shores with only a small risk of a shower… then for tomorrow and the weekend expect about 5 to 7 hours of sunshine each day with the daily risk of scattered thunderstorms. Highs along the coast will stay mostly in the upper 80s, and the sea water temperature early this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 80 degrees.

TROPICS: The Atlantic basin remains quiet, and tropical storm formation is not expected through the weekend.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
