DRY SUMMER AFTERNOON: The sky is mostly sunny across the great state of Alabama this afternoon; nothing on radar and temperatures are pretty close to 90 degrees. Tonight will be clear and pleasant; most communities will drop back into the mid 60s early tomorrow morning.

TOMORROW/FRIDAY: A dry airmass remains in place, and we expect a partly to mostly sunny sky both days with a high between 90 and 93 degrees. We might consider mentioning a slight risk of a shower Friday afternoon, but if any form they should be few and far between.

LABOR DAY WEEKEND: Moist air surges northward, and with the approach of an upper trough showers and storms enter the Alabama weather scene Saturday. No all day rain, no severe storms, but the sky will feature more clouds than sun, and there is a pretty good chance of a passing shower or storm anywhere in our state during the day. No way of knowing now exactly when and where it will rain, but if you have something planned outdoors, just be aware that you will have to dodge raindrops from time to time. The high will be in the 80s.

Showers and storms should be fewer in number and more scattered in nature Sunday and Monday with a mix of sun and clouds both days; highs will range from 87 to 90 degrees.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: No rain for the high school games tomorrow night… only a small risk of a shower Friday evening; the sky will be mostly fair with kickoff temperatures in the upper 80s.

Auburn kicks off their season Saturday with a home game against Arkansas at Jordan-Hare Stadium at 3:00. The sky will be mostly cloudy, and there is a 50/50 risk of a shower or thunderstorm during the game. Kickoff temperature near 86, falling into the low 80s by the final whistle. The rain won’t be continuous, but I would take the rain gear.

Alabama will play West Virginia in the Georgia Dome, so no rain worries for the game; as you walk to the game expect a mix of sun and clouds with a shower or thunderstorm possible in Atlanta during the afternoon and evening hours. The high in Atlanta Saturday will be in the mid to upper 80s.

UAB opens with a home game against Troy at Legion Field in Birmingham (11:00 a.m. CT kickoff)… mostly cloudy with 86 degrees at kickoff, rising into the upper 80s by the fourth quarter. A passing shower or thunderstorm is possible during the game.

AT THE BEACH: Mostly sunny days through Friday with only a small risk of a shower or storm. Then, on Saturday, the sky will be occasionally cloudy with showers and storms becoming more numerous, but it won’t rain all day, and the sun should be out at times. Then, for Sunday and Monday, about 5 to 7 hours of sunshine both days with a few scattered storms around. Highs on the immediate coast will be in the 87 to 90 degree range, with sea water temperatures mostly in the low to mid 80s.

TROPICS: Hurricane Cristobal is between the coast of the U.S. and Bermuda in the Atlantic, and will move northeast into the open North Atlantic in coming days… not threat to land. A low level swirl is in the western Gulf of Mexico; hurricane hunters actually went into that today and found nothing significant. It will drift into the southern tip of Texas within the next 36 hours; no impact here. The wave nearing the Leeward Islands remains weak and disorganized.
