Mostly Dry Tomorrow; Showers Return Saturday

SUNNY LATE AUGUST DAY: Mostly sunny weather is the story across the great state of Alabama this afternoon; nothing on radar, and temperatures are mostly in the low 90s. Dewpoints/humidity levels remain relatively low, so it feels pretty comfortable for a “low 90s” kind of day.

Tomorrow will be generally dry, but moisture levels will begin to rise, and I will mention the risk of widely scattered showers during the late afternoon and evening hours. The sky will be partly sunny with a high in the low 90s.

LABOR DAY WEEKEND: A moist, unstable airmass will move in here late tomorrow night, and we will continue to mention a chance of showers and thunderstorms Saturday. We still see considerable model differences; the GFS is wet and the NAM is much drier, so confidence in the timing and placement of rain is not especially high. The sky will feature more clouds than sun, and we will have the risk of a few passing showers or thunderstorms during the day. The rain won’t be continuous, and the sun should be out at times. The high Saturday should be in the mid to upper 80s.

For Sunday and Monday, showers and storms are still possible, but they should be fewer in number, and more scattered in nature. Expect a mix of sun and clouds both days with a high in the 89-92 degree range.

NEXT WEEK: The upper ridge builds again for mid-week, meaning hot early September weather for mid-week with only widely scattered afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms; highs will be in the low to mid 90s. See the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and more details.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: No rain for the high school games tonight… only a small risk of a shower tomorrow evening; the sky will be mostly fair with kickoff temperatures in the upper 80s.

Auburn kicks off their season Saturday with a home game against Arkansas at Jordan-Hare Stadium at 3:00. The sky will be mostly cloudy, and there is a 50/50 risk of a shower or thunderstorm during the game. Kickoff temperature near 86, falling into the low 80s by the final whistle. The rain won’t be continuous, but I would take the rain gear in case a shower wants to roll through the Plains.

Alabama will play West Virginia in the Georgia Dome, so no rain worries for the game; as you walk to the game expect a mix of sun and clouds with a shower or thunderstorm possible in Atlanta during the afternoon and evening hours. The high in Atlanta Saturday will be in the mid to upper 80s.

UAB opens with a home game against Troy at Legion Field in Birmingham (11:00 a.m. CT kickoff)… mostly cloudy with 86 degrees at kickoff, rising into the upper 80s by the fourth quarter. A passing shower or thunderstorm is possible during the game.

AT THE BEACH: About 3-6 hours of sun tomorrow and Saturday with a few passing thunderstorms. Sunshine will be a bit more plentiful Sunday and Monday with storms becoming more widely spaced. Highs on the immediate coast will be in the upper 80s, and sea water temperatures are mostly in the mid 80s.

TROPICS: Hurricane Cristobal is moving toward the North Atlantic with sustained winds of 75 mph; no threat to land. A weak disturbance is moving into South Texas with no development; otherwise the tropics are pretty quiet. Quite a contrast to 9 years ago today, when Hurricane Katrina reached category five status over the Gulf of Mexico. The storm weakened to a category three by landfall the the following day, but the large size of the system resulted in a storm surge of 24 and 28 feet on the Mississippi coast.
