RADAR CHECK: All is quiet across Alabama this morning… nothing on radar, but there is some patchy fog, especially where showers and storms formed yesterday afternoon.

The overall pattern isn’t much different today with moist air over the state and a weak upper low near Mobile. We do note precipitable water values are down a bit; they were around 2.1″ yesterday over North/Central Alabama, but this morning they are near 1.9″. Still sufficient for scattered showers and storms this afternoon and this evening, but the coverage will most likely be lower than what we saw yesterday. Highs today will be in the upper 80s in most places.

TOMORROW AND THE WEEKEND: Pretty much the same story tomorrow and Saturday… very humid with a mix of sun and clouds both days along with scattered showers and thunderstorms, most numerous during the afternoon and evening hours. Impossible to tell you exactly when and where the showers will form, but if you have something planned outdoors, just be ready for rain at times. The afternoon high will remain in the 87-90 degree range.

The GFS is back on the idea of drier air working down into Alabama from the north Sunday, hinting that most of the showers and storms Sunday afternoon will come over the southern half of the state. Not quite ready to buy into that due to model inconsistency; we will still mention the chance of a passing shower or storm Sunday afternoon for now. The high will be generally in the upper 80s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the high school games tonight and tomorrow night… the weather will be warm and humid with kickoff temperatures mostly in the mid to upper 80s. A shower or storm will be possible during the first half at a few stadiums; the specific risk of rain for any one given field is about 30 percent.

Alabama hosts Florida Atlantic University (FAU) at Bryant-Denny Stadium Saturday (11:00a kickoff)… expect a mix of sun and clouds with the risk of a passing shower or thunderstorm during the game. The temperature will rise from near 85 at kickoff, to near 89 by the final whistle.

Auburn will host San Jose State at Jordan-Hare Stadium Saturday evening (6:00p kickoff)… it will be warm and humid with a kickoff temperature in the mid 80s; the chance of a shower or storm is about one in three, mainly during the first half of the game. Temperatures will fall into the upper 70s by the fourth quarter.

UAB is on the road, playing Mississippi State at Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville (2:00p kickoff). Hot and muggy conditions are likely during the game, with a kickoff temperature near 90 degrees. A shower or storm is possible during the game, but the rain won’t be continuous, and the sun will be out at times.

NEXT WEEK: We will keep the chance of “scattered, mostly afternoon and evening showers and thunderstorms” going for at least the first half of next week; see the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

TROPICS: A tropical wave is coming off the coast of Africa, some chance of slow development this weekend, but very dry air will surround the system as it moves west/northwest. The rest of the Atlantic basin is very quiet.

AT THE BEACH: About 6 to 8 hours of sunshine each day along the coast from Panama City over to Gulf Shores with scattered storms possible. Highs in the upper 80s on the immediate coast… the sea water temperature early this morning at the Dauphin Island Sea Lab is 86 degrees.
