UNDER A BIG WET BLANKET: Not much overall change in our weather through tomorrow as a muggy airmass remains parked over the state with dew points in the 70s. We project a mix of sun and clouds today and tomorrow with the continued risk of scattered, slow moving showers and thunderstorms. While they will be most numerous during the afternoon and evening hours, we can’t totally rule out a late night or morning shower. The chance of any one spot seeing a shower or storm remains in the 30-40 percent range, and highs will be in the upper 80s.

Drier air will slip into the northern third of Alabama Sunday, so showers north of Birmingham will be relatively hard to find, but we will maintain the risk of scattered showers and storms along and south of I-20. The high will remain in the upper 80s Sunday afternoon.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the high school games tonight… the weather will be warm and humid with kickoff temperatures mostly in the mid to upper 80s. A shower or storm will be possible during the first half at a few stadiums; the specific risk of rain for any one given field is about 30 percent.

Alabama hosts Florida Atlantic University (FAU) at Bryant-Denny Stadium tomorrow (11:00a kickoff)… expect a mix of sun and clouds with the risk of a passing shower or thunderstorm during the game. The temperature will rise from near 85 at kickoff, to near 88 by the final whistle.

Auburn will host San Jose State at Jordan-Hare Stadium tomorrow evening (6:00p kickoff)… it will be warm and humid with a kickoff temperature in the mid 80s; the chance of a shower or storm is about one in three, mainly during the first half of the game. Temperatures will fall into the upper 70s by the fourth quarter.

UAB is on the road, playing Mississippi State at Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville (2:00p kickoff). Hot and muggy conditions are likely during the game, with a kickoff temperature near 89 degrees. A shower or storm is possible during the game, but the rain won’t be continuous, and the sun will be out at times.

NEXT WEEK: Looks like showers and storms will be widely scattered Monday through Wednesday, but a pattern change will push a cold front through here later in the week Thursday night; ahead of the front a band of showers and thunderstorms is likely. Then, cooler and drier air will push into the state at the end of the week on Friday, making it feel like fall. A good chance we drop into the 50s early Saturday morning (September 13). See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

TROPICS: A tropical wave near the Cape Verde Islands will move west/northwest in coming days with some slow development possible. If anything happens to form here, more than likely it will gain latitude and recurve before impacting the U.S. But, it is too early to call. And, over in the East Pacific, Hurricane Norbert is near the southern tip of Baja California; it will weaken and dissipate early next week, but moisture from the system will move up into the Southwest U.S. with potential for some flooding over parts of Arizona and New Mexico by Monday and Tuesday.

AT THE BEACH: About 6 to 8 hours of sunshine along the coast from Panama City over to Gulf Shores through early next week, with scattered storms possible each day. Highs will be mostly in the upper 80s, with sea water temperatures generally in the mid 80s.
