RADAR CHECK: As expected, we have another classic case of random, scattered, slow moving showers and thunderstorms across the great state of Alabama this afternoon. The heavier storms are producing torrential rain, lots of lightning, and gusty winds, and due to light winds aloft there is very little motion. Away from the showers and storms, temperatures are mostly in the mid to upper 80s.

Showers and storms will fade away later tonight once the sun goes down.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: No real change tomorrow. Humid air, mixed sun and clouds, and the risk of scattered showers and thunderstorms, most numerous during the afternoon and evening hours. The chance of any one spot getting wet tomorrow will remain in the 30-40 percent range.

The GFS continues to advertise drier air over the northern half of the state Sunday, so from I-20 north the risk of a shower will be small; the bulk of the showers and storms will be over the southern counties of Alabama. Highs over the weekend will be generally in the upper 80s.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the high school games tonight… the weather will be warm and humid with kickoff temperatures mostly in the mid to upper 80s. A shower or storm will be possible during the first half at a few stadiums; the specific risk of rain for any one given field is about 30 percent.

Alabama hosts Florida Atlantic University (FAU) at Bryant-Denny Stadium tomorrow (11:00a kickoff)… expect a mix of sun and clouds with the risk of a passing shower or thunderstorm during the game. The temperature will rise from near 85 at kickoff, to near 88 by the final whistle.

Auburn will host San Jose State at Jordan-Hare Stadium tomorrow evening (6:00p kickoff)… it will be warm and humid with a kickoff temperature in the mid 80s; the chance of a shower or storm is about one in three, mainly during the first half of the game. Temperatures will fall into the upper 70s by the fourth quarter.

UAB is on the road, playing Mississippi State at Davis Wade Stadium in Starkville (2:00p kickoff). Hot and muggy conditions are likely during the game, with a kickoff temperature near 89 degrees. A shower or storm is possible during the game, but the rain won’t be continuous, and the sun will be out at times.

NEXT WEEK: Widely scattered showers and thunderstorms are possible Monday through Wednesday, then we expect an organized band of showers and storms late Thursday and Thursday night. And, on Friday, a much cooler and drier airmass will drop in here from the north thanks to a deep upper trough that is expected to form over the eastern third of North America. Some of the colder pockets across North Alabama could see lows in the upper 40s by Saturday September 13. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

GULF COAST WEATHER: About 6 to 8 hours of sunshine each day through early next week with the daily chance of scattered showers and thunderstorms. Highs will be in the upper 80s, and sea water temperatures are mostly in the mid 80s.

TROPICS: A disturbance near the Cape Verde Islands in the far East Atlantic could show some slow development over the weekend, but it expected to gain latitude, and it does not look like a system that will be an issue for the Gulf of Mexico. The rest of the Atlantic basin is quiet. Over in the East Pacific, Hurricane Norbert will move northwest parallel to the coast of Baja California this weekend, weakening as it encounters colder water. But, moisture from Norbert will move up into the Southwest U.S. late in the weekend with heavy rain possible for parts of Arizona and New Mexico.
