RADAR CHECK: Showers and storms are confined to the far southeast part of Alabama this afternoon as cooler and drier air takes over the northern half of the state. Temperatures are only in the 70s north of Birmingham with a cobalt blue sky and low humidity.

Temperatures

Tonight will be the coolest night so far this fall season; most communities around here will wind up in the low to mid 50s, but cooler pockets across North Alabama should reach the upper 40s with a clear sky and light wind. Perfect night for the equinox; fall arrives at 9:29p CT.

REST OF THE WEEK: Basically some very fine early fall weather. Sunny warm days, clear cool nights. Highs in the low 80s, lows mostly in the 50s and low 60s. No risk of rain with a very dry airmass in place.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: We expect a sunny sky Saturday to kick off the weekend with a high in the low to mid 80s. Moisture returns Sunday, however, and we will mention the chance of an afternoon shower Sunday with a high around 80 with a mix of sun and clouds.

NEXT WEEK: Showers and storms become more likely Monday… see the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

TROPICS: All is quiet across the Atlantic basin, and tropical storm formation is not expected through the week.

GULF COAST WEATHER: Mostly sunny days, fair nights through Saturday from Panama City to Gulf Shores. Highs will be in the mid 80s, and sea water temperatures are also in the mid 80s. A very nice series of days on the coast.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40. We will produce this week’s show tonight at 8:30 CT… you can watch it on “James Spann 24/7” on cable systems around the state, or on the web here.

I enjoyed seeing the second graders at Westminster School at Oak Mountain earlier today… be looking for them on the Pepsi KIDCAM today on ABC 33/40 News at 5:00! The next Weather Xtreme video will be posted here by 7:00 a.m. tomorrow…
