Cooler Air Moving Into Alabama

THIS MORNING: Temperatures are generally in the 40s across North/Central Alabama as we begin the day; coldest spot I can find is Black Creek, just northeast of Gadsden, where Vic Bell reports 36 degrees with some light frost. The sky is clear and the air is dry. Today will be a cooler day for the state, with a high in the mid to upper 60s for most communities thanks to a new surge of cool air dropping in from the north.

Tonight will be one of the coolest nights so far this fall season; most communities will see a low between 38 and 42 degrees. Colder valleys across North Alabama could drop very close to freezing by daybreak tomorrow.

Sunny weather continues tomorrow and Friday with a slow warming trend.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: More dry, pleasant weather. Sunny days, fair nights. Highs 74-78… lows 48-53.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Clear and cool conditions for high school games Friday night; temperatures will fall from the upper 60s at kickoff into the upper 50s by the fourth quarter.

Saturday is a big football day in Birmingham with the Magic City Classic at Legion Field, featuring Alabama State and Alabama A&M. The sky will be sun filled (2:30p CT kickoff); 76 degrees at kickoff, with mid 60s by the final whistle. There is no risk of rain.

Auburn will host South Carolina Saturday evening at Jordan-Hare Stadium (6:30p CT kickoff)… the sky will be clear, with temperatures falling from the upper 60s at kickoff into the upper 50s by the fourth quarter.

Alabama is on the road; they take on the Tennessee Volunteers Saturday evening in Knoxville (6:30p CT kickoff). The sky will be clear with a kickoff temperature near 62 degrees, falling into the 50s by the second half.

UAB plays on the road at Arkansas in Fayetteville Saturday (11:00a CT kickoff)… expect a sunny sky with a kickoff temperature near 77 degrees, rising into the low 80s by halftime. No risk of rain.

NEXT WEEK: Still no sign of rain for our state; still looks like it will be sometime in early November before wet weather returns. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

TROPICAL DEPRESSION NINE: It formed last night over the Bay of Campeche in the far Southwest Gulf of Mexico. The system will move eastward across the Yucatan Peninsula in coming days, and if it survives it will end up in the western Caribbean this weekend. The GFS model wants to turn it northward toward the southern Gulf of Mexico; the 00Z operational run of the GFS shows ultimate landfall north of Tampa on Halloween. This, of course, is voodoo, but we will keep an eye on it in coming days. One way or another it should have no impact on Alabama weather.

If by chance this develops into a tropical storm, the name will be Hanna.
