COLDEST SO FAR: Here are some temperatures across the great state of Alabama at daybreak…

Haleyville 20
Decatur 20
Valley Head 21
Cullman 21
Black Creek (just northeast of Gadsden) 21
Birmingham 23 (wind chill index of 15)
Center Point 23
Montevallo 24
Bessemer 24
Huffman 25
Concord 25
Gardendale 25
Anniston 26
Sycamore 26
Tuscaloosa 27

The good news is that the sky will be mostly sunny today, but temperatures remain far below average; the GFS and the NAM are printing a high of only 41 degrees for Birmingham today.

Expect another very cold night tonight; most places will be in the mid 20s early tomorrow.

OUR WEEKEND: Tomorrow will be another cold, dry day with a partly to mostly sunny sky; the high will be at or just over 50 degrees, still about 15 degrees below average for mid-November. Clouds return Sunday, and rain should begin Sunday afternoon… that rain becomes widespread Sunday night thanks to a surface low that should move over far South Alabama. The southern half of the state can expect 1 to 2 inches of rain, and up our way, the north-central Alabama counties should see at last 1/2 to 1 inch. It will be our most signifiant rain since October 13, when Birmingham measured 1.91″.

MONDAY/TUESDAY: The rain will end from west to east during the day Monday, and right after that we deal with another surge of very cold air. Not out of the question for a flake or two of snow to fall over North Alabama as it all ends and the colder air arrives, but for now there is no evidence that it will be anything signifiant. Temperatures should begin to fall Monday afternoon with a gusty north wind, and by Tuesday morning we will be close to 20 degrees, with a wind chill index down in the single digits.

It will be a struggle to get above freezing Tuesday despite the return of sunshine, and the wind chill index will remain below freezing most of the day with a north wind of 10-20 mph. Then, Tuesday night, the wind will die down, and with a clear sky we expect our coldest temperatures yet by early Wednesday morning. The GFS is printing a low of 17 degrees now for Birmingham at daybreak Wednesday.

LATER NEXT WEEK: The upper air pattern thankfully deamplifies, and we begin to warm up. Temperatures reach the 40s Wednesday afternoon, 50s Thursday, and we will be close to 60 Friday afternoon. Some hints we might have some rain late in the week, or the following weekend (November 22-23)… see the Weather Xtreme video for the maps, graphics, and more details.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: For the high school playoff games tonight, we project a kickoff temperature around 38 degrees, then falling through the 30s during the games. Needless to say, you will need to bundle up. The sky will be clear.

The biggest college game in the country will be in tomorrow Saturday as Mississippi State comes to town to take on Alabama. If you are planning on being with the ESPN GameDay crew, early morning temperatures will be in the mid 20s around daybreak, rising through the 30s, and reaching the 40s by late morning. The kickoff temperature (2:30p CT) will be close to 51 degrees with a mostly sunny sky, but as the sun goes down temperatures will drop quickly into the 40s during the second half.

Auburn will be over in Athens, GA to take on the Georgia Bulldogs tomorrow evening (6:15p CT kickoff)… expect 46 degrees at kickoff, with temperatures dropping slowly through the 40s during the game. The sky should be mostly fair.
