Warming Trend Through The Weekend

LET THE WARM-UP BEGIN: It was as cold as 12 degrees in Alabama this morning (that was the low at Black Creek, in Etowah County); this afternoon most places are near the 50 degree mark as the warming process begins, and the Deep South begins to dig out of the deep freeze. The sky is mostly sunny, and the air is dry.

Tonight won’t be as cold as recent nights; most places will see a low in the 25-32 degree range. The sky will remain mostly fair.

TOMORROW/FRIDAY: The warm-up continues; with a partly sunny sky we reach the upper 50s tomorrow, and low 60s Friday. No rain.

THE WEEKEND: Clouds should slowly increase during the day Saturday, but the weather stays dry. We could have a fairly range in temperatures; a cool 1030 mb high near Virginia Beach could keep the far eastern part of Alabama in the 50s, but 60s are likely over Central and West Alabama Saturday afternoon. All in all a pretty comfortable day.

A vigorous storm system will bring rain and thunderstorms to our state after midnight Saturday night and into the day Sunday. The 12Z run of the GFS suggests the main window for storms will come from about 2:00 a.m. until 12:00 noon Sunday. Not much overall change in our thinking; surface based instability will be very limited over the northern half of the state, which hopefully will mitigate the chance of severe storms around here. But, closer to the coast, storms could bring strong winds, and an isolated tornado threat. At the moment it looks like the highest risk of severe weather Sunday morning will come along and south of Alabama Highway 10, or south of a line from Butler to Greenville to Troy to Abbeville.

Rain amounts of one inch are likely across North/Central Alabama, with potential for over two inches over the southern quarter of the state. And, the rain will end from west to east Sunday afternoon as a dry slot moves in. If the sun can break out Sunday afternoon after the rain, we could see mid 70s around here.

THANKSGIVING WEEK: A cold front moves through the state Monday, and at this point the chance of really significant rain looks rather low. Then, the rest of the week looks dry with mostly sunny cool days and fair cold nights. By Wednesday, Thursday (Thanksgiving Day), and Friday we expect a high between 47 and 51, with a low in the upper 20s or low 30s. Below average, but not as cold as the recent Arctic blast. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

FOOTBALL WEATHER: Very nice weather for the high school football games across North/Central Alabama Friday night; mostly fair with temperatures falling from 53 at kickoff, into the mid to upper 40s by the final whistle.

Saturday is homecoming at the Capstone in Tuscaloosa, and for the football game (Alabama vs Western Carolina) that kicks off at 3:00 p.m.. the sky will become mostly cloudy during the game, but the weather should be dry. Expect a kickoff temperature near 64 degrees, falling to near 58 by the fourth quarter. Pretty comfortable, especially compared to last weekend.

Auburn will host the Samford Bulldogs Saturday evening at Jordan-Hare Stadium (6p CT kickoff)… mostly cloudy with 57 degrees at kickoff, and low to mid 50s by the fourth quarter. No rain expected.

And, a big game for the UAB Blazers; they host Marshall at Legion Field (11:00a CT kickoff). Clouds will increase during the game, but no rain. Temperatures will rise from near 60 at kickoff, to near 63 by the fourth quarter.
