A bit of chill in the air this morning as temperatures across Central Alabama were in the 30s. Some spots dipped into the 20s with the Skywatcher at Black Creek reporting a heavy frost with a low of 23. Quite a range of temperatures this morning with readings running all the way from that 23 to 42 at the Birmingham airport. Moisture was evident in clouds across the western sections of Alabama. Those clouds will mix out later this morning with a mostly sunny day for us as highs climb into the 60s.

For football fans, terrific weather today if you are heading to Tuscaloosa for the Iron Bowl. Tailgating will have no weather woes with a sunny sky and temperatures in the 60s. By the time the games kicks off, 6:45 pm, a partly cloudy sky will see the temperature around 58 slowly drop through the 50s by the fourth quarter.

In the upper atmosphere, we have a nearly zonal flow in place with the main storm track displaced well north for this time of year. This will keep us in generally good weather for the week ahead with temperatures warmer than we usually see for late November. Our 30-year average highs run about 61 with lows about 40. We should stay above those values for the week ahead.

A short wave trough moving through the nearly zonal flow will bring a cold front into the Tennessee Valley by Monday and Tuesday. Rain chances will be fairly small as the front loses its southward push and gradually washes out. With a ridge in place over the western Gulf, we will have to wait until late next weekend before we see our next shot at some rain as a strong system digs into the Southwest US. This verges on voodoo country, so timing may have to be adjusted on precisely when this system takes shape.

Looking out into Week 2, looks like a wet system and some colder weather around the 11th of December. That should be followed by a fairly quick warm up.
