BIG CONTRAST: It is a cold early December day in Northwest Alabama, where temperatures are barely out of the 40s. However, south of a stalled front from Reform to Cullman to Fort Payne, temperatures are close to 70 degrees in Birmingham and Anniston. And, to the south, Montgomery has soared to 77 at mid-afternoon. There are a few sprinkles on radar over North Alabama, but most of the state is dry.

Temperatures

This time, the warm air will win the battle, as the front will slowly begin to lose it’s identity and lift northward over the next 24 hours.

REST OF THE WEEK: Our weather stays very mild and dry tomorrow and Thursday. Expect a mix of sun and clouds both days with a high very close to the 70 degree mark, about ten degrees above average for early December. Then, a surface wave west of the state Friday will bring showers to areas north and west of Alabama. For now it looks like most of the state will stay dry during the day Friday, although some rain could creep into the far northern counties by mid to late afternoon. Friday stays mild with a high between 67 and 70.

OUR WEEKEND: The best chance of showers will come Saturday. It won’t rain all day, and the rain probably won’t be too heavy, but occasional showers are likely over the northern half of the state with a cloudy sky and a high in the mid 60s. Then, as the wave moves east of the state, Sunday looks dry with a partly sunny sky and a high between 60 and 65.

NEXT WEEK: Colder air drops into our state by Tuesday and Wednesday, with highs in the 50s and lows in the 30s. Looks like most of the week will be dry; see the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

WEATHER BRAINS: Don’t forget you can listen to our weekly 90 minute netcast anytime on the web, or on iTunes. This is the show all about weather featuring many familiar voices, including our meteorologists here at ABC 33/40.
