Mild Air Wins The Battle

THIS MORNING: The stalled surface front over North Alabama is beginning to lose it’s identity this morning; this feature was responsible for cold air over the northwest counties of the state yesterday, where some communities barely touched the 50 degree mark. South of the front yesterday, temperatures soared into the low to mid 70s.

We project a high in the 68 to 71 degree range today for places like Tuscaloosa, Birmingham, Anniston, and Gadsden; to the north it won’t be as cold as yesterday with highs in the low to mid 60s. Expect a mix of sun and clouds today with no significant rain expected.

TOMORROW/FRIDAY: Looks like tomorrow will be the warmest day of the week. With a partly sunny sky, we project a high in the low 70s. The average high for December 4 is 59, and the record high for the date is 78, set in 1998. Then, on Friday, clouds increase ahead of a short wave that will bring rain to our state. The GFS model keeps the daytime hours Friday generally dry, but we will need to introduce the chance of showers late in the day and Friday night, especially for Northwest Alabama. The weather stays mild with a high around 70 degrees.

THE ALABAMA WEEKEND: A few periods of rain are likely over the northern half of the state Saturday. No severe weather, probably no thunder, and the rain won’t be too heavy with amounts under 1/2 inch. But, if you have outdoor plans, no doubt we should see some rain at times with a high in the 60s. The wave will be east of our state by Sunday, however, with dry weather returning along with a partly sunny sky and a high in the mid 60s.

SEC CHAMPIONSHIP WEATHER: For Alabama fans traveling to Saturday’s game against Missouri in Atlanta, thankfully the game is being played in the Georgia Dome since periods of rain are likely there during the day; the high will be close to 60 degrees. Only a small risk of a stray shower Sunday in Atlanta.

NEXT WEEK: Temperatures get back to where they should be for mid-December for much of the week, with highs in the 50s, and lows in the 30s. Looks like a majority of the week will be dry, and we see no severe weather threats through mid-month, and no sign of any really cold, Arctic air as well.
