DRY THROUGH THE WEEKEND: Expect another freeze early tomorrow morning across North/Central Alabama; most communities will see a low near 30, with 20s likely for colder valleys and protected areas. Then, a warming trend begins tomorrow afternoon as temperatures rise into the mid to upper 50s with a sunny sky.

The weekend looks very nice; ample sunshine Saturday and Sunday with afternoon highs up in the low 60s. Mornings will be chilly with lows in the mid to upper 30s. No moisture, no chance of rain.

NEXT WEEK: A short wave will bring increasing clouds to Alabama Monday, and showers are a good possibility Monday night. Still looks like the main window for rain will come from about 6:00 p.m. Monday through 6:00 a.m. Tuesday, and amounts should be generally under 1/2 inch, with potential for heavier totals over the northwest corner of the state. No severe weather threat, and probably not much thunder. Drier air returns Tuesday afternoon, and Wednesday and Thursday look dry with a good deal of sunshine both days along with a high near 60 degrees.

Global model consensus is good on the potential for a dynamic system around Saturday, December 20 that would bring the risk of heavy rain and maybe even strong thunderstorms.

CHRISTMAS WEEK: This is still in a period where there is very little skill in a specific forecast (beyond seven days), but for now global models hint most of the week will be dry with temperatures near or a bit below seasonal averages for late December. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.

RAIN UPDATE: Birmingham has received 44.41″ of rain since January 1; that is a deficiency of 6.47″. Bottom line is that there is a good chance we end up with a rain deficit for 2014 as the year ends in a few weeks. Tuscaloosa and Anniston have similar totals.
