SEVERE CLEAR: Another day of blue sky and sunshine across the great state of Alabama this afternoon; temperatures are very close to seasonal averages, with most places in the mid to upper 50s. The air is dry, and there is no rain on radar.

The dry weather continues throughout the weekend, with sunny pleasant days and clear chilly nights. After an early morning low close to the freezing mark, we rise into the low 60s tomorrow with a sunny sky. Mid 60s are likely by Sunday afternoon as our slow warming trend continues.

NEXT WEEK: Short wave energy will bring clouds into Alabama Monday, and showers could reach the western counties during the afternoon hours. The better chance of rain statewide will come Monday night, and this still doesn’t look like a big rain event… with limited moisture rain amounts should be under 1/2 inch. There could be a little thunder in spots, but there is no risk of severe weather.

The sky becomes partly sunny Tuesday afternoon, and the high will be close to 60. Wednesday looks rain-free and pleasant as well; we might need to insert the risk of showers toward the end of the week Thursday and Friday as moist air begins to return ahead of a vigorous weather system to the west.

The core impact of that storm system should come on Saturday December 20, when rain and storms are likely statewide. This could be a heavy rain/strong to severe thunderstorm setup, at the moment it looks like the highest risk of severe storms will come over the southern part of the state, but with this event eight days away there is no way of resolving details now.

CHRISTMAS WEEK: The 12Z GFS shows a cool, dry week for Alabama with seasonal temperatures; highs mostly in the 50s and lows mostly in the 30s. The AO/NAO combination remains positive, which will make it hard to get bitterly cold air this far south. See the Weather Xtreme video for maps, graphics, and more details.
