A Sunny Christmas

Some morning fog thanks to the rains of Tuesday and early Wednesday. That fog rose into a low cloud deck for a few hours after sunrise, but most spots across Central Alabama should be sunny for most of the day with highs in the lower and middle 50s.

The weather stays good for Friday, but another storm system is developing over the southern Rockies creating quite a bit of winter weather for the central and northern Rocky Mountain states with numerous winter weather advisories and warnings in effect. We should warm up a little on Friday with highs in the upper 50s.

That storm system begins to impact us on Saturday with clouds coming in late Friday night and early Saturday with rain showing up by the latter half of Saturday. Fortunately we are warm enough that we won’t have to deal with any wintery precipitation issues. But we will be closing out the last weekend of 2014 on a wet note. Probably not a bad thing since Central Alabama is about 5 and a half inches below the average annual rainfall. It will remain mild, too, with highs Sunday and Monday from 58 to 65.

The upper trough kicks by quickly on Monday so the rain chances should come down pretty quickly during the day Monday. Tuesday and Wednesday are going to be mostly dry but we will keep low chances of showers in the forecast since we will maintain a nearly zonal flow across the Southeast US. The next system takes shape as we move into voodoo country. The good news is there are no signs of any really cold weather through the first days of 2015.

Another potent storm system takes shape in the early days of 2015. This one bears some watching since the GFS is suggesting the possibility of winter weather across the Lower Mississippi River Valley. As it stands right now, the models keep the winter weather off to our northwest, but there is always a degree of uncertainty dealing with something specifically this far out. The pattern remains active with another substantial trough coming into the Southwest US around the 9th of January.
