Alabama 811 | Know What's Below.

Arctic Blast Ahead

| January 4, 2015 @ 5:46 am

Now that the storms are over, we can turn our attention to bitterly cold air that will invade Alabama this week.

WEDNESDAY: The cold air begins to arrive with a biting north wind of 12-22 mph; a good chance we won’t get out of the 30s, and the wind chill index will be below freezing much of the day.

THURSDAY: The wind will die down late Wednesday night, and we are expecting some single digit lows across North Alabama at daybreak. Here are the projected lows Thursday morning from the new high resolution GFS model…

Places like Birmingham, Anniston, Gadsden, and Tuscaloosa should experience a low between 10 and 15 degrees.

During the day Thursday, despite a sunny sky, most of North/Central Alabama will stay below freezing all day with a high between 28 and 32. Thankfully the wind won’t be as bad.

FRIDAY: Another very hard freeze Friday morning… temperatures should be similar to those we see early Thursday. Then, a slow warming trend begins Friday afternoon with a high around 40.

We reach the low 50s over the following weekend (January 10-11), so thankfully the bitter cold won’t stick around for long. And, the air will be very dry and there is no risk of snow, freezing rain, or any other type of “wintry precipitation”.

Brian will be along later with a full discussion and a new Weather Xtreme video.
